A new report suggests that carbonated water may support weight loss by enhancing glucose uptake and metabolism in red blood cells. While the effect is small, researchers say sparkling water should be integrated into a broader strategy of healthy living.

Water is renowned for its health benefits, and sparkling water may offer unique advantages as well. A recent report published in BMJ Nutrition, Prevention, and Health suggests that carbonated water could contribute to weight loss by enhancing glucose uptake and metabolism in red blood cells.

Researchers investigated the physiological effects of carbonated water, noting its potential to induce satiety (a feeling of fullness) and gastric motility (the movement of food through the digestive system), both factors that can reduce hunger. In analyzing a 2004 study, the team discovered that carbonated water may promote weight loss by converting to HCO3-, a byproduct of metabolism, in red blood cells and increasing energy production. However, the researchers concluded that this effect is 'so small' that it is 'difficult to expect weight loss effects solely from the CO2 in carbonated water.' Consequently, they emphasized that sparkling water should not be solely relied upon as a weight-loss solution and should instead be 'integrated into a broader strategy of healthy living.'Dr. Akira Takahashi, head of medicine at Tesseikai Neurosurgical Hospital in Osaka, Japan, who led the original research two decades ago, explained that while carbonated water does impact weight loss through promoting fullness, which can lead to reduced food intake and lower overall calorie consumption, the calorie burning through CO2 absorption is 'insufficient to make a significant difference.' For instance, he cited a study where continuous CO2 supply during hemodialysis for four hours only consumed approximately 9.5g of glucose. 'Therefore, I believe it is unlikely that carbonated water alone could lead to weight loss,' Takahashi concluded. Further research is needed to fully understand the effect of carbonation on weight loss due to fullness. Water in general is beneficial for health, but if weight loss is a goal, it's essential to consider a comprehensive approach.Experts recommend incorporating sparkling water into a broader strategy of healthy living. This includes making dietary changes, increasing physical activity levels, and potentially seeking medical guidance for weight management. Certified holistic nutritionist Robin DeCicco acknowledged that more data is necessary to determine the optimal pairings with soda water for weight management. She emphasizes that individual weight loss strategies should be tailored and that a balanced diet, regular exercise, and addressing underlying medical conditions are crucial for sustainable weight management. While carbonated drinks can create a feeling of fullness, it's important to be aware of potential consequences like bloating, gas, and aggravated reflux issues
