Ohio State offensive lineman Ian Moore is about to enter his second season in Columbus, and could be ready to play soon.
Ohio State football’s 2025 staff is complete. Here’s who’s working with Ryan DayRyan Day is adding offensive line experience to Ohio State football’s staff Former Ohio State line coach Justin Frye recalls emotional phone call with Cardinals tackle Paris Johnson “Spring ball,” he told Cleveland.
com during Rose Bowl media day. “I think it was week three or something. We were one-on-ones, and it wasn’t even like Jack or J.T. , it was Eddrick Houston. We were doing one-on-ones and he just completely ran over me. I was like, ‘Wow.’” No one could or should blame Moore for that rep — the learning curve from high schooler to college offensive lineman is a steep one — and the defender he had to block was a five-star defensive lineman who contributed to a national title winning team throughout the season. Those learning moments, though, are what might have him ready to play in his second year with the program. And depending on how the offensive line shakes out, he might have to be ready to step into the lineup.“I think freshman year has gone pretty good,” he said at the time. “I feel like I’ve developed a lot, but I feel like the most development I think I’ve seen is in my state of mind and my understanding of the game of football.” Moore, a 2024 signee, played predominantly at right tackle in his first season with the program. He did practice at left tackle, briefly, once Josh Simmons was lost for the season with an injury, but returned to the right side shortly thereafter. The host of injuries forced him into the two-deep, and now headed into 2025, he is pushing to be the third tackle on the roster, one that’s capable of playing at either end of the line. “I feel like you just have to mature,” Moore said of entering the two-deep. “I mean, this is going to sound kind of stupid, but you can’t be a freshman anymore, so you just have to mature with your mindset.” Once the No. 168 overall prospect per the 247Sports composite rankings, Moore was the highest-rated of all 2024 signees along the offensive line for Ohio State. Now, entering year two with the program, he’s going to have to be ready to step into the lineup if needed. Ohio State brought in two tackle transfers — Ethan Onianwa and Phillip Daniels — who likely pencil in as the team’s starting tackles on the left and right side. But considering the depth, and perhaps lack thereof, at the position, the Buckeyes might be relying on Moore to play significant reps in 2025. Moore noted that his growth was in the areas that might not be immediately noticeable — he wasn’t making as many mistakes as the year wore on, and he cleaned up his technique from where he was at when he arrived on campus. “It’s just subtle things like just hand placement. Coach Frye’s really good with that. Hand placement, footwork, that stuff. I’ve just kind of punched wherever. Now, I’ve got significant or specific strike places, and so I feel like that’s helped a lot.” With former tackle Josh Fryar as a mentor, he said he also learned how to have a play-to-play mentality and not be dwell on prior snaps. Fitting, because Moore’s development should have him in a place where those snaps against Houston, or any other talented defensive end, are few and far between. That’s notable, considering his development might have him in the Ohio State lineup sooner rather than later.
