What does Curt Cignetti do that shows Nick Saban's influence on Indiana?

was the wide receivers coach and recruiting coordinator in Tuscaloosa from 2007 through 2011, helping land some of the top players in Crimson Tide history. Now, Cignetti has his own team ready to reach the top of the sport.

The Hoosiers will face Miami in Monday’s national championship game, after a College Football Playoff run that included a 38-3 drubbing of Alabama.“He’s reflected on how much he’s learned by coach Saban,” Fisher said. “But I think this is his own blueprint and a proven one with a great track record. It’s been his process, one that he’s kind of grown and developed, but it’s one that works. So he’s done a great job. He’s the best head coach in football, and he’s just a phenomenal person to play for.”“I think we’re so accustomed to just going to the next game, being in the moment, and then we have an extremely veteran and great leadership-based team,” Fisher said. “The guys all sitting right here on this row have done a great job of just, we can’t sit back and think about that last game a lot, it’s on to the next. We have a great opportunity in front of us, coach Cignetti has made that very clear, and so have the guys that have been part of the senior leadership.” IU tight end Riley Nowakowski also spoke of Cignetti’s relationship with Saban’s teaching. He reiterated that the Hoosier coach largely doesn’t focus on his past at Alabama. “I’m sure some stuff he’s told us he took from Alabama. He doesn’t talk about that too much,” Nowakowski said. “I mean, he’s– I’m sure he’s very thankful for the opportunities he got there, but no, he’s just kind of focused on us. I think he does a good job. He doesn’t talk about his past or anything too much. Obviously had a lot of success at JMU previously. Everywhere he’s been previously. I think he does a good job of like he understands those teams aren’t our team.” This week, Cignetti must do something that Saban excelled at: Eliminate distractions in an environment that is fraught with them. Indiana has never been on this stage before, and it will be facing a Miami team that has the advantage of its home stadium.“It’s the same. It’s the exact same thing,” Haines said. “I think that’s what makes coach Cignetti’s system unique, makes what we do unique. This is another football game. Granted, there’s some media obligations. There’s a couple changeups to the normal routine. "But at the end of the day, process-oriented people, process-oriented football teams stick to the process. That’s what’s brought them success, so that’s what you continue to bring them success. So we’re sticking to what we do, and the schedule’s been about the same.” Indiana and Miami are scheduled to kick off at 6:30 p.m. CT Monday. The national championship game will be aired on ESPN.Matt Stahl covers University of Alabama sports for AL.com. He joined AL.com in July of 2023.
