Like all North Texas communities vying for a slice of the population and economic boom in the region, Mesquite is working to distinguish itself as a community...

As people and businesses flock to North Texas, one Dallas County city is working to find a way to set itself apart.

A train passes as Lisa Higgins, left, and Ronda Fitch, center, hula hoop with instructor Alberta Harris with Healing in My Hoops at the Mesquite Farmers Market on Saturday, June 1, 2024, at downtown Mesquite's Front Street Station.Over the past several years, volunteers have cleaned up and built an art park and helped excavate and ready the grounds for the Front Street Station, which now hosts concerts and weekly farmers markets.

The first is what Abell politely terms “traffic-calming.” Downtown Mesquite has the one-way streets of Main and Davis, also called State Highway 352, that run through its core and are populated by nearby access to both Interstate 635 and U.S. Highway 80.“We have inadvertently given over to the car when downtown should be about the pedestrian,” said Abell.

“We’re working on an overlay that’s going to allow you to do light manufacturing in the back of the building and retail in the front, or where in certain buildings you can live in the back and have a business in the front — just like it was 100 years ago,” said Abell.Beyond cultural draws like the Solar Rodeo tied to this year’s eclipse, a handful of new local concepts are popping up such as Mexican food restaurant Alejandro’s at Front Street Station and Bear Cave Coffee.

Mesquite, which at its last U.S. Census count hovered around 147,000 residents, has about three in four residents reporting to be persons of color., however, is met by lower earnings for jobs within its city limits. An economic development strategy plan unveiled by the City of Mesquite in 2023 reported median earnings of $32,000, a figure $3,000 less than the Texas average and $4,300 less than the national average.
