Before coronavirus, grandparents provided a vital childcare service – we ask a doctor what's safe now

According to Boris Johnson latest briefing 'wrap-around care for school age children and formal childcare will restart over the summer,' but of course, with more industries opening that means a lot of parents returning to work without childcare right now.

'From 4 July, two households of any size should be able to meet in any setting inside or out,' Johnson said. 'That does not mean they must always be the same two households. It will be possible for instance to meet one set of grandparents one weekend, and the others the following weekend.' As with the advice given around social-distancing in general – it’s not therefore about specific cases, but the increased risk of spreading the disease.‘At the moment, kids seem to be quite resilient against the virus, but they can transfer it. So just because the child doesn’t get really sick, it doesn’t mean they can’t transmit the virus to someone that could get really sick,’ said Dr Kane.
