A fire at Sun Retreats Seashore campground in Cape May County caused significant damage to several campsites, including mobile homes. The fire started Sunday afternoon and burned into the evening.
A group of campsites at a campground near the Jersey Shore were destroyed by a fire that began Sunday afternoon and burned past sunset. The fire, stoked by propane tanks, damaged multiple campsites at Sun Retreats Seashore , a campground with sites for recreational vehicles and tent camping in Lower Township in Cape May County . It’s located between Cape May and the Wildwoods off Route 9.Crews used seven hand lines to extinguish the blaze and requested additional support, firefighters said.
Several firefighters continued to douse burning areas of the campground into the early evening. Photos shared by the fire company show flames burning through sections of one mobile home. Another mobile home was completely engulfed in flames in another. It was unclear how long it took firefighters to extinguish the blaze, if injuries were reported or whether anyone was occupying the mobile homes during a mostly quiet offseason near the shore
