The last thing Arizona State wanted to do was suffer a loss on Senior Day. Pre-game festivities at Desert Financial Arena honored six players, five of whom started.
The team that took the floor for this one looked more like the team that started the season 15-3 rather than the one that has struggled of late. ASU forced 17 turnovers and finished with a 20-2 advantage in points off turnovers.
“We got the stops we needed, the one negative we didn’t really rebound great," ASU coach Bobby Hurley said."But as far as giving up too many offensive rebounds, but our field goal percentage defense is where we needed it. We guarded at the line well, pretty well. We won the paint 40-30 and good work getting the ball to Warren and finding him but also the guards were not settling for all jump shots and were driving and making some shots.
Utah, which had been 17-0 in games in which they led at the half, shot 38.3% , which included a 6-for-25 from long distance. The Utes biggest lead of the game was seven points in a first half that ended with them ahead 26-25.ASU made just one of its first 13 3-pointers but made the last two and both proved pivotal. Desmond Cambridge Jr, hit one with 1:57 left to give ASU a 58-57 lead.
Utah dominated on the boards all night and that helped them on the ensuing possession when they got four shots at a 3-pointer. The fourth try, that one by Lazar Stefanovic caromed out of bounds, giving ASU the ball. One of the earlier Utah misses came when Warren Washington blocked a shot by Ben Carlson.
