Cam Johnson addressed not agreeing to a rookie extension with Phoenix Suns heading into Wednesday's season opener against Dallas at Footprint Center.
“Negotiations are interesting, especially when ownership is unclear,” said Johnson, a reference to team majority owner Robert Sarver announcing his intention to sell the team after backlash from an NBA investigation into his behavior within the organization.Suns vice chairman and minority owner, Sam Garvin, is the interim team governor.
“Extremely interesting,” Johnson continued. “Once you see that the situation is what it is, you can get over it relatively quickly and just be excited for the opportunity that’s been put in front of you.” Johnson wasn’t expected to receive a four-year, $90-million deal like Mikal Bridges, but the idea of him receiving $15 million to $18 million a year for the same number of years seemed logical.
“He ran it down for me,” Bridges said about Johnson explaining the contract talks. “He was telling me the situation. Cam’s so smart so he knows and understands everything. I was more confused in not understanding why.” He wanted the rookie max extension from Phoenix, but his agents left the negotiating table without an any extension. Ayton went into the summer a restricted free agent and wound up staying after the Suns matched Indiana’s offer sheet of four years, $133 million.
Ayton said Johnson has been “just putting his head down and working,” something that can be challenging for a player when he’s looking for an extension.
