The oldest continuously operating rail line will unveil its new schedule Sept. 21, the same day its fleet goes fully electric
Caltrain will roll out two electrified trains every week until its full Sept. 21 launch of the rail line’s electric fleet and the unveiling of its new schedule.
Caltrain officials coordinated with BART leadership on the new schedule to make it easier for riders to transfer between the respective rail lines in an effort to attract riders. Caltrain officials also said they hope to make the rider experience more attractive aboard its electric fleet with amenities such as on-board displays featuring digital trip information, increased storage capacity, power outlets at every seat and free Wi-Fi.
The California Department of Transportation first commissioned a feasibility study on electrifying Caltrain in 1992. Twenty-five years later, the rail line broke ground on the $2.4 billion project. Caltrain began energizing its track and testing trains last year. “Weekday Gilroy service will continue to run on diesel trains for the time being, with a three-minute cross platform transfer at Diridon,” he added.
