The Celtic skipper was pivotal to his side's win at Ibrox against rivals Rangers and will take his talents to the international stage.
But that won’t stop him being captain material in Cyprus and leading with the kind of authority he showed on Sunday when he took Celtic to Ibrox and emerged with all three points.
“I think people know he’s the catalyst and he produced that and had some wonderful passing at the weekend. The engine-room’s a difficult place to be at times and he had a composure in there. I knew him when he was a kid and the one thing he’s always had was that ability on the ball, and he shows that.
“But the players handled it ever so well, they went into the lion’s den and absorbed it with a makeshift central defence. But people maybe look into it too much. Boyd knows McGregor won’t. He earmarked the current captain as something special long before he hit the first team under Ronny Deila. The Celtic ambassador and club TV analyst remembers coaching in the youth ranks when the teenager began to make an impact. He added: “We went on a tournament to Donetsk on the youth side. It was an under-17 team but he was under-15 and got pushed up. He didn’t look out of place and was one of our better players in that wee tournament .
He added: “Andy Robertson will be the Scotland captain but there can be more than one captain on the field. When I was captain of Celtic and when we stopped the 10 look at the characters, Paul Lambert, Neil Lennon, Henrik Larson, all these guys. You need that. If you’ve got three, four, five, six of them in a team that can really bring a side on.
