'We'd rather people take a trip to the Lake District'
On almost every lamppost and railing in the quiet village of St Michael’s on Wyre, the smiling face of missing mum Nicola Bulley can be seen.
Locals have watched as people have posed for selfies on the bench where Nicola’s mobile phone was found. Others have been seen snapping pictures of themselves alongside missing person posters. Giles said in recent days the village has seen an increase in families visiting the riverside to watch the search operation. He said: “It would be helpful if people could let the authorities do their jobs. We don’t want anyone to hinder the investigation. This is not a spectator sport.
“All these extensive lines of inquiry, however, have not found anything of note. We would ask that people in the wider community, particularly on social media and online not to speculate as to what may have happened to Nicola. This is particularly hurtful to her family, her children, her partner Paul, her parents, her sister and her friends. It is not helpful to them. It is distressing and distracts from the police inquiry.
Police have also issued a warning to those 'taking the law into their own hands' when it comes to the search. Supt Riley said: “We will not tolerate online abuse of anyone, including innocent witnesses, members of the family and friends, of local businesses, or of criminal damage or burglary. We will be taking a strong line on that, as you would expect.”
