Cars are safer than ever, but the country's road toll is still increasing. Race car driver-turned-instructor Paul Morris says teaching road safety skills in schools could be the answer.

In the week since October 15, nine people have died as a result of car crashes on Queensland's roads — five of them on a single day. "Driving on the road is a high-risk activity and like any high-risk activity we deal with it by modern education and technology, but we are just living in the past," he said.Mr Morris said he wanted to see a similar approach to how the country had tackled drowning statistics.
Ms Warner said she was a better driver because of the hands-on practical experience and she wanted other teenagers to have access to the same education she did."I'm a practical learner, I can't learn by theory and I can't write it down and remember off the top of my head unless I do it."Not 'just scaring people straight'
"It's not just one approach that will magically fix the issues that we're experiencing in Queensland, it needs to be a more system-wide kind of improvement," he said."It's something that should be really integrated throughout the whole curriculum."Dr Rodwell said young people were over-represented in fatal crashes and general crash statistics."Some evidence suggests that that might not be the best way," he said.
