Darren Rodwell, the leader of Barking & Dagenham Council, has been slammed for the 'deeply shocking and offensive' action.
Labour are facing calls to suspend a local council leader from the party after photos emerged of his election banner being hung from gravestones.
Sam Holland, the Tory candidate for nearby Dagenham and Rainham, has written to Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer to demand Mr Rodwell be suspended from the party and for an investigation to be launched. 'This belies a shocking lack of judgement and character in pursuit of political office. It may also constitute a criminal offence. Labour activist Matt Lismore posted photos of Mr Rodwell's banner on social media on Saturday. He also said he saw the council leader attaching the banner to the gravestones.
He added: 'I not only removed the banner from the gravestones myself, I also told Darren Rodwell and various other councillors in attendance at this 'event' that I was appalled with this conduct - I took the pictures for proof prior to removing the banner.'
