New research suggests just under one in four puppies bought in Scotland are thought to have originated on a puppy farm as owners miss signs after being captivated by cute images online.

Scots are being urged to be 'puppy wise' with callous breeders using cute images on social media to dupe people into buying sickly dogs. The disturbing influence of social media on puppy buying in Scotland, and how it is used by farm operators, has been revealed by new research from one of the country's largest dog welfare organisations.

Adele said: "I instantly just fell in love with this little fluffy white ball of cuteness, Mac, that I had been dreaming of since we first decided to get another puppy, and looking back, I can see maybe that distracted me. "We sat with him all evening but he just wouldn’t engage or interact in anyway. He wasn’t interested in eating or drinking anything – again we put it all down to the long car journey and being in his new environment."

“We tried calling and calling the breeder but we were never able to get hold of her, the number just kept coming up as failed as if it had been disconnected. Kennel Club guidance The Kennel Club has issued an urgent warning to dog buyers in Scotland after their research discovered 20 per cent of people spent less than two hours researching before buying a dog.

If going to visit a dog, people should attend a house to meet with the puppy and observe the dog with its mum, ensuring all animals at the home are well looked after. And - in November 2019 - Kaylee Robb, 33, from Dundee, bought a Rottweiler puppy for £300 from a breeder in Stranraer after seeing an advert on Gumtree.
