California is battling a series of devastating wildfires, with thousands of people evacuated from their homes. The Auto Fire, a new blaze in Ventura County, has consumed over 50 acres, posing a significant threat to the region. Authorities are working tirelessly to contain the fires, aided by firefighters from across the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. Meanwhile, investigations are underway into potential causes, including faulty utility equipment.
A new fire, the Auto Fire, erupted in Ventura County, early Tuesday morning, that spread to 56 acres and prompted new evacuation orders, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection. As of Tuesday morning, 0% of the Auto Fire has been contained. Mayor Bass told a group of reporters that President-elect Donald Trump has been invited to tour the areas devastated by wildfires. 'I have talked to key members of the incoming administration,' Bass said.
'He has absolutely been invited. In a news conference Tuesday, police announced they have made nearly 40 arrests for looting, flying drones that could interfere with firefighter aircraft and violating curfew. This number does not include arrests made by the LAPD or other agencies. Three people were arrested on suspicion of arson for attempting to start small fires, said LA Police Chief Jim McDonnell. One individual attempted the fire using a barbecue lighter, another ignited brush while the third set fire to a trash can outside of a disaster zone. All fires were immediately extinguished.High winds ramping up Tuesday morning have put Los Angeles in a “particularly dangerous situation” red flag warning from the National Weather Service. While the Hurst Fire north of Los Angeles has been fully contained, a new wildfire broke out on Monday evening in Ventura County. The Auto Fire burned more than 50 acres by Tuesday morning.On Monday, planes spread bright pink fire-retardant chemicals along homes and hillsides, while crews deployed to vulnerable areas with dry brushes. Water trucks came in to replenish supplies after hydrants ran out last week at a critical time when two fires erupted. During Monday’s press conference, Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass and other officials expressed confidence that the region was ready to face the growing challenges and fire threats with additional firefighters brought in throughout the U.S., Canada and Mexico.Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna said his team has been grid searching areas for the remains of wildfire victims. “It is a very grim task and we unfortunately, every day we are doing this, we are running across the remains of individual community members,” Luna said during Monday’s press conference. “That is not easy work, very sad to report.”At a Monday evening community meeting about the Palisades Fire, a Los Angeles Police Department official said many people reported missing have been found. At the moment, under 100,000 in Los Angeles County remain under evacuation orders, which is half the number from last week.Many celebrities and entertainment organizations, including Disney, have pledged millions in donations to help those who have lost their homes or been displaced by the wildfires. Taking advantage of the situation During a press conference Monday evening, Los Angeles District Attorney Nathan Hochman said many people have been arrested for looting homes that have been left by evacuating residents. Officials are also starting to see price gouging and scams amongst hotels, short-term rentals and medical supplies, Hochman said.Sheriff Robert Luna said during a SundayLAPD Chief McDonell said the man was arrested for impersonating a firefighter. McDonell called out people who will “go to all ends to do what it is they want to do and exploit victims of this tragedy.”The fires that began Tuesday have burned through and destroyed more than 12,000 homes, cars and other structures.A lawsuit filed Monday claims the utility equipment of Southern California Edison might have started the Eaton Fire. Edison has acknowledged investigations into the claims. AccuWeather suggests the fires could be the nation’s costliest catastrophe with $250 billion in damages, not including what is to come in the next days.
