A California police department released video Sunday of a shoplifting suspect acting surprised when she learned low-total theft is once again a felony charge in the Golden State. The Seal Beach Police Department posted a video on Instagram showing a group of individuals allegedly stealing $648 worth of items from an Ulta Beauty store. The group went on to steal an additional $237 in merchandise from Kohl's, police say.

Police dash and body cams then show officers apprehending the suspects and placing them in custody. Two of the suspects are heard talking in the back of a police vehicle. During that conversation, one suspect breaks some unsettling news to the other suspect.'B****, new laws,' the other responds. 'Stealing is a felony. And this is Orange County, b****, they don't play.' The suspect is referencing Proposition 36, a California ballot initiative that undid parts of a 2014 measure relaxing punishments for certain crimes, including retail theft. Proposition 36 passed this year with 68.4% of the vote and went into effect Wednesday morning. Many businesses, from big-box stores to local shops, blamed the 2014 reforms for a noticeable increase in retail theft. The outrage some Democratic lawmakers, including San Francisco Mayor London Breed, to sound the alarm earlier this year.in February. 'But when there are no real consequences for crimes that are committed in this city, that’s a real problem.” California Republicans were highly critical of the reforms after they passed in 2014. However, Gov. Gavin Newsom remained insistent the reforms were not 'the fundamental issue' leading major retailers to shutter stores in the state. The passage of Proposition 36 comes as Californians resoundingly reject soft-on-crime politicians.
