California Secretary of State Shirley Weber on elections, reparations and voting rights [Opinion]

California Secretary of State Shirley Weber, appointed by Gov. Gavin Newsom to the top elections post last year, is now running for re-election. She recently met with The San Diego Union-Tribune Editorial Board to discuss her work trying to increase voter participation and battle distrust in the voting process.

In talking about the “Big Lie” in which ex-president Donald Trump says without proof that he beat President Joe Biden in the 2020 election, Weber listed ways she is working to improve election transparency and address any doubts Americans may have about election integrity. She also answered questions about her views on allowing California residents under the age of 18 to vote, and the proposition that election day should be a holiday.

The board also asked Weber, a San Diego Democrat, about some of her previous efforts as an assemblymember and her position on reparations for African Americans.
