California's mountain getaway of Lake Tahoe inundated by smoke

On Wednesday the firm Purple Air reported the Lake Tahoe area had the worst air quality in the world.

reported a U.S. Air Quality Index peak of 422 for South Lake Tahoe early Wednesday. That put the air near the freshwater lake in the Sierra Nevada Mountains in the"hazardous" range.

The last time the area experienced anything near this week's smoke, she said, was during the Rim fire, which burned for weeks in late summer 2013.Wednesday warned Tahoe residents to"limit outdoor physical activity and stay indoors if possible."
