Two California men were sentenced for their roles in a $44 million scheme to file fraudulent tax returns on behalf of professional athletes and phony PPP loan applications.
for prior years to correct what they falsely claimed were "errors" made by the athletes' prior accountants. Their company, Mana Tax, charged the athletes for 30% of the fraudulently obtained tax refunds, causing a total tax loss of over $19 million per DOJ.The trio of fraudsters also submitted false applications for forgivable loans from the Paycheck Protection Program , which was created to aidduring the depths of the COVID-19 pandemic.
