Newport Beach, California Mayor Will O'Neill voiced frustration Tuesday over 21 migrants being detained on a boat just one mile from his city.
The mayor of Newport Beach, California, the city a mile away from the recent interception of a boat carrying 21 migrants, said Tuesday local law enforcement is “handcuffed” by a law restricting it from enforcing immigration statutes.
The Coast Guard said last week it took 21 migrants into custody from a boat operating suspiciously outside Newport Harbor. Each of the migrants were later released to Border Patrol, the Coast Guard said. One of the problems we have here in California is when they use the word ‘sanctuary state,’ it’s a cute phrase that they’re trying to evoke peace,” he told Faulkner.
California Senate Bill 54, signed into law in 2017, prohibits state and local law enforcement agencies from using staff or money to “detect,” investigate, interrogate, detain or arrest people for immigration enforcement. O’Neill called the state’s “sanctuary policy” insane and suggested its governor is living privileged.
