Governor Newsom calls for special session to address wildfire recovery costs. Federal aid may be contingent on conditions from the incoming Trump administration.

Governor Gavin Newsom and state lawmakers convened on Tuesday for a special session to determine the funding mechanisms for Los Angeles County's recovery from the catastrophic wildfires. The session, initially called to bolster California's policies against potential federal rollbacks, shifted its focus to address the immediate needs resulting from the devastating blazes. Newsom is proposing approximately $2.

5 billion in emergency response funding, with $1 billion allocated from the state's emergency reserves account and the remaining amount sourced from the climate-related measures passed in November. While the federal government is anticipated to partially reimburse these expenses, the change in administration raises concerns about the feasibility of securing those funds. Newsom and President-elect Donald Trump have a well-documented history of strained relations. However, recent developments suggest that Trump may accept Newsom's invitation to visit California and personally assess the extent of the wildfire damage. During the wildfires, Trump criticized Newsom's handling of the emergency, urging his resignation. The incoming administration, along with the Republican House speaker, has indicated that federal aid may be contingent upon certain conditions. 'He's done it in Utah. He's done it in Michigan, did it in Puerto Rico,' Newsom stated, referring to Trump's past practice of threatening to withhold federal funds. 'He did it to California back before I was even governor in 2018, until he found out folks in Orange County voted for him and then he decided to give the money. So he's been at this for years and years and years.'The state Legislature is slated to delve into the funding discussion on Tuesday morning, and according to sources, a vote on the proposed allocation could occur later this week
