Authorities responded to the area about 5 p.m. Saturday for a possible rescue, but “witnesses lost sight of the victim and the rescue operation later transitioned into a likely recovery operation,” Oregon State Police wrote in anOfficials from the Oregon State Parks said on theirthat people have died going past the safety fences at Cape Kiwanda before because the cliff edge crumbles easily and suddenly.
Stefanie Knowlton, a communications specialist for Oregon State Parks, told SFGATE that the last reported fatality at the park was in February 2016, also the result of someone bypassing a safety fence and falling into the ocean. “Our thoughts are with the family and loved ones of Henry Minh Hoang. We share our deepest condolences on his tragic death. While we don’t know the full details of this incident yet, it reminds us all that beautiful landscapes can also be deadly,” Knowlton said. “We urge everyone to please stay behind the safety fences, report emergencies to 911 and report any unsafe conditions to local state park staff.
