A long march and a long wait paid off for California's farmworkers this week in Sacramento. HeyKitty has reactions to a moment union supporters won't soon forget and what it could mean for workers in San Diego.
It was the end of a long vigil for the farmworkers, that began in August with a 335-mile walk to the capitol. Among them was Xochitl Nunez, a farmworker from Orosi who picks peaches.
She told KPBS she could not believe she was there when he signed the bill. “It was like am I dreaming I’m dreaming, no I’m not dreaming the governor is here,” Nunez said, and added that after signing the bill, Newsom gave her a signed copy and hugged her. “I remember saying, ‘Thank you so much for you sign,’ and the only thing he said is, ‘You’re welcome.’ I don’t know a lot of English, but I was telling him I was thankful, it’s something I’ll never forget, he said I’ll remember you I’ll never forget his words,” she said through tears.
“California’s farmworkers are the lifeblood of our state, and they have the fundamental right to unionize and advocate for themselves in the workplace,” Newsom said in a statement after signing the bill."Our state has been defined by the heroic activism of farmworkers, championed by American icons like Cesar Chavez, Dolores Huerta, and Larry Itliong. California is proud to stand with the next generation of leaders carrying on this movement.
It will give owners a choice between “a flawed mail-ballot scheme or ... an unsupervised card-check scheme,” said the California Farm Bureau Federation in opposition before Newsom announced the agreement on additional safeguards.Pandemic protections ending for San Diego rentersThe San Diego County Sheriff’s Department says there have been 17 in-custody deaths this year, but advocates say that number is wrong and are demanding accountability.
