California Governor Gavin Newsom announced an executive order targeting 'ultra-processed' foods and synthetic food dyes, aiming to protect public health and promote access to nutritious options.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom on Friday announced an executive order calling for a state crackdown on 'ultra-processed' foods and food dyes . The probe will examine “the adverse health effects of synthetic food dyes and increase access to affordable, healthy foods.” It also seeks recommendations on potential action to limit the harm caused by these foods by April. “The food we eat shouldn’t make us sick with disease or lead to lifelong consequences,” the governor said in a press release.

“California has been a leader for years in creating healthy and delicious school meals, and removing harmful ingredients and chemicals from food. We’re going to work with the industry, consumers and experts to crack down on ultra-processed foods, and create a healthier future for every Californian.” California has already enacted a ban on soda at K-12 schools and restricted caffeine at grade schools. It also proposed a sugar content limit on “non-dairy milk.” '“Through today’s executive order, we’re making a decisive and transformative commitment to further California’s work to prioritize health and nutrition as fundamental building blocks for thriving communities,' California First Partner Jennifer Siebel Newsom added. 'By connecting the dots between whole food, mental wellness, and strong cognition, we are creating an environment where every child has the opportunity to realize their full potential. This is a powerful move towards health, equity, and a California for ALL Kids.” The executive order follows Gov. Newsom’s approval of a 2024 bill to prevent public schools from serving foods with six synthetic food dyes. The dyes listed in the bill included Red Dye 40, which is commonly found in snacks like Doritos and Flamin’ Hot Cheetos. Also mentioned was Yellow 5, an additive in Mountain Dew and M&M
