A 10-year-old girl from Oakley, California , is being celebrated as a hero after her quick thinking saved her entire family from a devastating house fire that destroyed their home early Tuesday morning.
Elizabeth Lizzy Morgan woke up when the power went out around 3 a.m., looked outside, and saw flames engulfing the porch. She immediately started screaming, alerting her 11-year-old brother Lucas, who joined her in running through the house to wake their parents and other relatives. All seven family members-four adults and three children-escaped safely, but the fire killed the family's dogs and a cat.
The blaze, which investigators believe started on the porch, quickly spread, bringing down nearby power lines and making it difficult for firefighters to respond. The Contra Costa County Fire Protection District is investigating the cause, but no suspicions of arson have been confirmed. The family, including mother Nena Morgan, expressed their gratitude and shock, noting that the loss of personal belongings like photos and sonograms is heartbreaking but that their children are heroes for saving their lives.
The fire comes after a suspicious backyard fire two weeks ago, which remains unexplained. The community has rallied around the family, offering support and donations. Chief Jeff Burris emphasized the importance of having working smoke alarms and a fire escape plan, as this incident could have been far worse without Lizzy's alertness.
