A father and son from California face federal kidnapping charges after holding two U.S. Forest Service employees hostage for fifteen hours in a remote national forest.
The incident began on a Thursday in the Shasta-Trinity National Forest, near the Gumboot Lake Campground in Siskiyou County. Joseph Henrichsen, 49, allegedly approached the two female forestry workers while armed with an AR-15-style assault rifle. He then used zip ties to bind their wrists behind their backs and forced them to accompany him to a secluded trailer located deep in the forest, according to a detailed criminal complaint filed by prosecutors.
During the captivity, Joseph Henrichsen used one of the victim's phones to make several calls. In one voicemail, he explicitly stated that he had taken two Forest Service employees hostage, describing one victim as having her hands ziptied behind her back. He threatened violence, saying he had live rounds ready for anyone who interfered with him. He also requested that a federal investigator come to the location so they could "talk things through a little bit," the complaint noted.
The voice of one of the terrified victims could be heard in the background of the recording, underscoring the immediate danger they faced. Law enforcement responded quickly to the emergency, establishing contact with Henrichsen and initiating prolonged hostage negotiations. The standoff lasted for hours but ultimately concluded without injury. The two employees were safely released and both suspects, Joseph Henrichsen and his 23-year-old son, Phoenix, surrendered to authorities early the following Friday.
Phoenix Henrichsen is accused of aiding and abetting the kidnapping by allegedly keeping watch and maintaining guard at the trailer while his father was elsewhere. Both men now face federal charges for kidnapping federal employees, a crime that carries a maximum statutory penalty of life in prison and a $250,000 fine if convicted. Their initial court appearance took place on Monday, where a judge ordered them detained pending further proceedings. A preliminary examination has been scheduled for August 3.
Joseph Henrichsen's attorney, Meghan McLoughlin, issued a statement indicating that there is often more to such cases than the government's initial allegations and that the full story will emerge through the criminal process.
