Poor air quality has caused the South Coast Air Quality Management District to issue an air quality alert for some cities.

The South Coast Air Quality Management District warned California residents in multiple cities to remain inside if possible this week to avoid poor air quality. On Sunday night, the AQMD issued an air quality alert for the cities of Indio, Palm Springs, Cathedral City, Palm Desert, Palm Desert Country, La Quinta and Coachella. The worsened air quality is caused by increased particle pollution from blowing dust, the alert said.

People with heart or lung diseases should follow their doctor's advice for dealing with episodes of unhealthy air quality. Children, older adults, and people with respiratory or heart disease should avoid prolonged exposure and strenuous activities when particle pollution levels are high.'Newsweek reached out by email to the AQMD for comment.Residents can contribute to lessening pollution levels by carpooling, telecommuting, reducing trips or taking public transportation, the alert said.
