California will begin enforcing its data privacy law—here's what you should know:
that the state will begin enforcing the California Consumer Privacy Act — which went into effect on January 1 — following a 6-month grace period allowing companies to comply.ensures that consumers in the state have a right to know what personal information is being collected from them and offers them the right ask companies to delete that information or opt-out of its collection altogether.
To comply with the law, a company will need to have a consent banner on their website that informs consumers their data is going to be collected and offers them the ability to opt-out. Additionally, companies will also need to create a process that will allow customers to request all the data a company has collected on them, along with ways to delete all that data. The law applies to businesses with annual revenue of more than $25 million; companies that collect the data of 50,000 or more consumers, households or devices; and businesses that get at least 50% of their annual revenue from selling consumer information.
Multiple trade associations — including the Interactive Advertising Bureau, the Internet Coalition and the California U.S. Chamber of Commerce — had written to the state in March to delay enforcement due to the disruptions caused by the pandemic.
