A new California law prohibits employers from holding mandatory meetings on political, religious, or union-related topics, protecting employees' right to abstain from these discussions.
Starting January 1, California employers will be prohibited from mandating meetings for employees related to political or religious views, or unionization. SB 399, the law behind this change, prevents employers from discussing their opinions on these matters in mandatory workplace settings. Workers cannot face disciplinary action for declining to attend such meetings.
Business groups, including the California Chamber of Commerce, opposed the law, arguing it infringes on employers' free speech rights and ability to discuss the impact of laws and regulations on their industries. The law does have exceptions for employees whose jobs involve discussing politics, such as those working for political parties. California joins nine other predominantly Democratic states in banning these so-called captive audience meetings. This legislation is seen as a victory for the labor movement
