The California Natural Resources Agency held a press conference today to discuss Governor Gavin Newsom's state of emergency
The California Natural Resources Agency held a press conference today to discuss Governor Gavin News om's state of emergency declaration aimed at expediting wildfire prevention projects. The initiative seeks to involve the community in proactive measures to combat the state's devastating fire seasons.
Following a challenging start to the year with severe fires in Los Angeles, Newsom and his team are working to eliminate bureaucratic hurdles that have delayed forest management projects. "I am very cognizant and mindful that we can't make up for the last hundred years. I'm very cognizant and mindful that good enough never is in this space and I'm very cognizant and mindful that we have a hell of a lot of work to do," said Newsom. Wade Crowfoot, Secretary of the California Natural Resources Agency, emphasized the importance of cultural and prescribed fires in the state's strategy. "A directive to Secretary Garcia and me to get back to the governor by the end of this month very specifically about recommendations about how to get more beneficial fire on the ground that's cultural fire by our tribal partners... that's prescribed fire," said Crowfoot. The order will also suspend certain state-level requirements, with Crowfoot's approval, to fast-track wildfire safety projects and promote the expansion of the California Vegetation Treatment Program. More information on the suspension request process is available
