Companies are in a heated race to release a wide range of Thunderbolt 5 accessories, with versatile hubs taking center stage. CalDigit, a prominent player in this field, has unveiled the Element 5 Hub, touted as its most formidable and high-performance hub to date. The CalDigit Element 5 Hub boasts an impressive array of nine ports, promising unparalleled connectivity, according to CalDigit.
While the competition features Thunderbolt 5 hubs with four Thunderbolt 5 ports, which is still a considerable amount, the Element 5 sets itself apart with its expansive port configuration. Beyond its four Thunderbolt 5 ports, the Element 5 incorporates two USB-C ports (10Gb/s) and three USB-A ports (10Gb/s). These Thunderbolt 5 USB-C ports are capable of delivering blazing-fast speeds up to 120Gb/s, enabling seamless connectivity with Thunderbolt 5 external storage devices. While the other USB-C and USB-A ports on the Element 5 Hub may not match these exceptional transfer speeds due to their non-Thunderbolt 5 nature, they still provide ample bandwidth for numerous accessories and offer 7.5 watts of power.A key advantage of Thunderbolt 5 technology lies in its support for multiple external displays. Thunderbolt 5 empowers the connection of up to three external monitors, at least on compatible Windows computers equipped with Thunderbolt 5 ports. It's possible to run three 4K 60Hz displays through the Element 5 Hub on certain Windows systems. However, CalDigit emphasizes that M4 Macs do not support triple displays via a single Thunderbolt 5 host connection. The Element 5 Hub consistently delivers a sustained 90 watts of power, facilitated by its included 180-watt power supply. This power supply surpasses the Thunderbolt 4 Element Hub's by 30 watts while being 42% smaller overall, enhancing portability during travel. The CalDigit Element 5 Hub comes bundled with a 0.8-meter Thunderbolt 5 cable, two rubber feet strips, a power cord, the 180-watt power supply, and, of course, the Element 5 Hub itself.
