She assumes her role on January 21st and will oversee daily operations, including cultivating the gardens and shaping a diverse program of exhibitions and events. Berrio envisions Calder Gardens as more than just an art space. She aims to create a multi-faceted experience that integrates art, architecture, and nature, fostering introspection and personal growth. Berrio's vision extends beyond traditional art exhibitions, encompassing practices related to wellness, environmental awareness, and a broader perspective on nature. She emphasizes the desire to create a space where visitors can connect with Calder's art and simultaneously embark on a journey of self-discovery. Alexander S.C. Rower, Calder's grandson and president of the Calder Foundation, expressed confidence in Berrio's capabilities, citing her expertise and interdisciplinary experience as crucial assets to the institution's success. He believes her ability to engage diverse audiences in innovative ways will be invaluable in shaping Calder Gardens' identity. Marsha Perelman, chair of the Calder Gardens Board, echoed Rower's sentiment, highlighting Berrio's unique approach and her ability to transcend the confines of a typical institutional director.Construction on the building is slated for completion by March 31st, followed by the installation of Calder's artworks throughout the spring and summer. During this period, Berrio will be developing her programs, recruiting staff, and collaborating with key stakeholders, including the Calder Foundation, the Barnes Foundation, and the curatorial committee. Originally projected to open in late 2024, the project encountered delays due to the discovery of a water main on site, which required relocation in late 2022. Calder Gardens, with a projected budget of nearly $58 million, including construction and an anticipated endowment of over $30 million, stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of Alexander Calder and his family's artistic contributions to Philadelphia.
