Men's and women's teams set to start regional play Friday and Saturday
Twice as an NAIA program, BJ Foster led the Cal State San Marcos men’s basketball team into the third round of the playoffs.
The CSUSM women , as a No. 4 seed, play No. 5 Azusa Pacific at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Cal State East Bay. The Cougars are ranked No. 20 in the nation on the WBCA Poll. Azusa Pacific is ranked No. 9.Joining CSUSM in the bracket are No. 15-ranked Cal State East Bay and No. 25 Western Washington. The Cougars earned the No. 1 seed by winning the CCAA tournament, beating Cal Poly Pomona, Chico State and then Cal State San Bernardino in the championship game.
The Cougars beat Chico State in the semifinals, but were upset by Cal State East Bay in the title game, costing them the No. 1 seed and a chance to host the tournament. Coming off a COVID-19 canceled season and with a number of new players, the Cougars got off to a 3-2 start, losing to Western Washington and Cal State East Bay, then ran off 18 straight wins before stumbling in the conference title tilt.
