Jordan Vasquez scores a team-high 26 points as Cal State San Marcos delivers the biggest win in program history, advances to Wednesday's Final Four
Faced with the prospect of playing the No. 1 seed in the NCAA Division II Tournament, Cal State San Marcos coach Renee Jimenez didn't back down. 'I don't think this David vs. Goliath, and we’re going to have to go in there and sling some rocks,' she said last week, adding ... 'I don’t think anyone feels like we’re going into something where we don’t have a shot.' San Marcos took their shots — and made them — on the way to the biggest win in program history.
The eighth-seeded Cougars advance to the D2 Final Four. They’ll play Wednesday night against either Georgia Southeastern or Minnesota State for a spot in the national championship game. Ava Ranson and Charity Gallegos added 15 points apiece for CSUSM. The Cougars may well have won the game at the line, where they hit 26 of 29 free throws — including a pair by Gallegos that extended their lead to four points with 1:26 left in OT. Mila Tameilau scored 10 of her 14 points from the line.
