Executive Director Sandi Hill stepping down but still will be involved in Cal State Games
When Sandi Hill founded the California State Games in the late 1980s, she hoped the Olympic-style sports festival would grow into something special, a cool way for athletes from all over the state to compete in San Diego County.
“When we started it was, ‘This sounds really fun, something exciting to do,’ ” said Hill, who will continue to participate in the non-profit in a part-time role and as chairman of the board. “And then when you see the kids show up and compete and have a good time doing it, it’s easily addicting.” Alumni include the likes of Reggie Bush , Tony Gonzalez , Ricky Williams , Monique Henderson , Ronda Rousey and Luke Walton . Hill says hearing them talk about their experiences has been one of the highlights of her involvement.
“The games are so great because they really are available to so many athletes, they even have water polo,” Smith said with a laugh. “I love the diversity of the games and the inclusion. It’s a great way to experience a taste of what the Olympic Games are all about.”
