It would best serve women, children and people with disabilities if this position were taken up by a minister with a genuine and more visible passion for the group she represents as Minister Maite Nkoana-Mashabane has consistently failed in her role.
From April to June 2022, 855 women and 243 children were killed in South Africa. There were over 11 000 assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm cases involving women and 1 670 involving children. In the same period, 9 516 rape cases were opened with the police, and 286 rapists were convicted. That's a conviction rate of 3%.
South Africa is a dangerous country for women and children. However, minister Nkoana-Mashabane is predominately silent on these issues and has failed dismally to position herself as a voice for these marginalised groups since she took up this portfolio. In her performance agreement, the minister was meant to establish a national GBVF council to tackle violence against women, yet four years since it was promised, it has not materialised. The minister was meant to have met this target in 2021. Get 14 days free to read all our investigative and in-depth journalism. Thereafter you will be billed R75 per month.
