Gov. Newsom and AG Rob Bonta are partnering with Alameda Co. DA Pamela Price to deploy state attorneys to crack down on crime in Oakland and the East Bay.Governor Newsom and Alameda County District Attorney Pamela Price have announced a new partnership to increase the ability to prosecute crime suspects.

Some city officials are welcoming the 'all hands on deck' approach, saying with violent crime up 21% in Oakland last year, this extra help is desperately needed. The governor's office announced Thursday that Newsom is sending in deputy attorneys general from the state Department of Justice and attorneys from the California National Guard.being deployed in the same area announced two days earlier. "Certainly, this is long overdue, we've been asking for the assistance, not only with the police presence on the street level, but also the reality is, is that we do need help at the district attorney level," Oakland City Councilmember Noel Gallo said.Governor Gavin Newsom says he is sending additional California Highway Patrol officers to Oakland in an effort to crack down on violent crime. Gallo says this help has been a long time coming, especially given the recent news of businesses closing over safety concerns. "I get a business call every day that they're leaving town, they're closing down, they don't have the customers," he said. "And then I get a call from the parents saying you know, Mr. Gallo, I'm afraid to have my children walk to school like we used to, because I'm afraid they're not going to return." The state attorneys are being brought in to investigate, analyze and prosecute suspects in violent, property and serious drug-related crimes. Governor Newsom says "individuals must be held accountable for their crimes using the full and appropriate weight of the law."An Oakland business is considering shutting down after being broken into and robbed four times just in the last month. "Certain things need to have a judge and jury look at it, plea deals have been in place for a long time, but certain things, plea deals are just not ethical, and they need to see a judge and jury and let other people decide," Brenda Grisham, Principal Officer of 'SAFE' Save Alameda For Everyone said.Grisham says she believes this could add fuel to the recall efforts and it sends a strong message to people in the Oakland area. "They're stepping up because it's kind of out of hand and they want to get it under control because our city is just, horrible," Grisham said. "We love our city, we love our county, it has a lot of good things and we need to get back to the good things about our environments and we're just not there yet." Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao was scheduled to appear on Midday Live on Thursday within hours of this announcement, but canceled Thursday morning. If you're on the ABC7 News app,
