BYD Energy Storage has signed a contract with Saudi Electricity Company (SEC) for a 12.5 GWh energy storage project, making it the world's largest grid-scale energy storage installation. The project will utilize BYD's new-generation MC Cube-T ESS, featuring its CTS (Cell-to-System) super-integrated technology, to store electricity generated from renewable sources like solar and wind. This massive project, combined with a previously delivered 2.6 GWh project, will reach a total capacity of 15.1 GWh and aims to support Saudi Arabia's ambitious renewable energy goals outlined in its Vision 2030 initiative.

China-based BYD Energy Storage has signed a contract with Saudi Electricity Company for the world’s largest grid-scale energy storage project. The contract signed between the two firms is for a capacity of 12.

5 GWh energy storage project. The project – combined with the earlier delivered 2.6 GWh project – now amounts to a massive 15.1 GWh.The project aims to make a stride towards advancing Saudi Arabia’s renewable energy industry. It will also help in meeting the ambitious goals set in Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 initiative. SEC aims to help the country achieve its optimal energy mix of 50 percent of renewables by 2030.BYD to supply BESS equipment to Saudi ArabiaUnder the contract, the Chinese firm will supply battery energy storage system equipment to Saudi Arabia for storing electricity generated from renewable sources like solar, wind. The equipment supplied by BYD Energy Storage will be installed at five sites in the country.“BYD Energy Storage will supply new-generation MC Cube-T ESS that adopt its globally pioneering CTS super-integrated technology, with a Vcts index exceeding 33 percent,” according to a press release. The equipment will integrate into Saudi Arabia’s power transmission network. The companies believe the BESS will play a pivotal role in addressing challenges posed by the rising number of renewable energy generation systems, ensuring stable power supply, and meeting peak energy demands. The magnitude of the project is huge, and BYD Energy Storage believes that it “will redefine the value and status of electrochemical energy storage solutions in the global energy landscape.”It further hopes to continue investing in technological research and development and collaboration with international partners to bring in a new era of energy transition. It also feels confident of delivering upon the Saudi Arabia project in time, to enable its smooth functioning in the desired timeline. The MC Cube-T battery storage systemThe MC Cube-T ESS to be supplied by BYD uses a new generation of lithium iron phosphate cells to store energy. The company’s website states that it has passed 10+ destructive tests, six-dimension high-precision detection, and four-level active and passive protection. The LFP battery is also safer and has a longer life, which leads to more energy and less footprint. The MC Cube-T BESS employs an intelligent liquid cooling technology to improve system efficiency comprehensively. BYD also states that it offers other benefits such as easy transportation, easy layout, easy installation, easy maintenance, and easy augmentation. The various models have an IP55 rating, and an average module measures 1.13m × 1.20m × 2.5m in size.It can function smoothly between temperatures of 86 degrees Fahrenheit and 113 degrees Fahrenheit . The maximum working altitude for it is 9.842 feet .Earlier last year, 192 sets of MC Cube-T BESS had been used for a wind-solar-thermal storage system project in China’s Northwest region. The project scale was 300 MW/ 1200 MWh, as per the company. The company says that to date, it has delivered over 75 GWh of BESS equipment to 350 projects spanning more than 110 countries and regions worldwide.
