By nurture or nature, SMU’s twin-tandem of Michael and Marcus Weathers has become better together | JoeJHoyt

The brothers have become incredibly versatile while starring for the Mustangs, a revelation that head coach Tim Jankovich didn’t see coming.Joseph HoytUNIVERSITY PARK — Twins are fascinating. Identical or fraternal, it’s two individuals bonded by birth, embarking on life’s journey in two different ways.

“I’d agree with that,” SMU head coach Tim Jankovich said. “Even though they don’t look alike, they have some similarities in their game. Totally.” Marcus had the same goal, but with a difference in speed, it wasn’t easy. A similar challenge unfolded when they find a court and play one-on-one. They’d go fullcourt against each other. One of their biggest strengths, they said, is their ability to adapt, and these one-on-one sessions were proving grounds for it. To cut off Michael’s speed, Marcus would work on angles.

There’s one major trait they share, though, and it’s perhaps what’s led to their similar playing style this year: Their physicality and toughness. And where did that come from?Their mom, Joann Loring, has always personified toughness, they said, way before she was diagnosed with leukemia. She’s still going through chemotherapy, and she’s only been able to make it two games this year, but the twins said she has a sense of relief knowing they’re playing together.
