LHP Álvarez received first round of cortisone shots on his left elbow to help alleviate pain from impingement.
SAN FRANCISCO — A day after receiving a cortisone shot in his troublesome left elbow, Giants reliever José Álvarez said he hopes the treatment is enough to avoid surgery and maintain the possibility of pitching again this season.
Álvarez, 33, landed on the injured list for the second time this season last week, not long after returning from a rehab assignment for a separate issue. Álvarez appeared in three rehab games while recovering from a lower back strain before returning and not being able to get past 60-65% effort in his delivery because of elbow pain.
The official diagnosis was a posterior impingement, which Álvarez described as similar to a bone spur. He said he experienced something similar in 2014 and underwent surgery to repair the bone spurs, which kept him out more than three months.
