National Park in Death Valley, California, on July 16, 2023. Tens of millions of Americans braced for more sweltering temperatures Sunday as brutal conditions threatened to break records due to a relentless heat dome that has baked parts of the country all week. By the afternoon of July 15, 2023, California's famous Death Valley, one of the hottest places on Earth, had reached a sizzling 124F , with Sunday's peak predicted to soar as high as 129F .

"Tragedies like the heat-related deaths of Florida nursing home residents following an extensive power outage during Hurricane Irma in 2017, the deaths of thousands of older adults in 21 European nations during the August 2022 heatwave, and the 3500 deaths - mostly among older adults - during the 2015 heatwave in India and Pakistan, highlight the threats posed by climate change-driven increases in ambient temperatures," they added.

"Increases in age 69+ populations are observed in all regions, consistent with past studies of global population aging, but they are concentrated in primarily low-income nations in the Global South, concentrated in Africa, Asia, and South America," lead author Giacomo Falchetta from the CMCC Foundation in Italy and colleagues observed.
