Pete Buttigieg is going up with a TV and digital ad buy in a dozen Super Tuesday states — one of the last 2020 presidential candidate to do so ahead of next week's mega-primary day.
to his supporters, setting a $13 million goal to raise between then and March 3, an aggressive fundraising pace that would requiring collecting at least $1 million every day to keep up. Buttigieg raised just over $6 million in January in the run-up to Iowa and New Hampshire, but he spent more than $14 million during that same period.
Buttigieg, who holds a slim delegate lead over Sanders in Iowa, is heading into a challenging stretch: an election calendar that boasts a more diverse voting population, where he's struggled to make inroads. He came in third place in the Nevada caucuses on Saturday, and he's polling in fourth place — behind Biden, Sanders and billionaire Tom Steyer — in South Carolina, according to recent polling.
For the new TV ads, the targeted states include: Alabama, Arkansans, California, Colorado, Maine, Massachusetts, Minnesota, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Texas, Vermont and Virginia. The campaign declined to share more details on how the spending would be allocated among those states, nor did it share the content of the advertising. Within the past few days, Buttigieg has started airing ads in South Carolina that criticize Sanders directly for the Vermont senator's single-payer health care plan.
