Rapper Busta Rhymes has been arrested for allegedly assaulting his assistant. The incident reportedly occurred in Dumbo, Brooklyn, where Rhymes allegedly punched his assistant multiple times after being berated for using his phone.
The rapper known for his hit song 'Break Ya Neck,' 52-year-old Trevor Smith Jr., was arrested in northwestern Brooklyn on Tuesday night and charged with third-degree assault. The arrest stems from an incident on Friday night where the NYPD responded to a 911 call near the intersection of Jay Street and Front Street in Dumbo. A 50-year-old male victim reported being harassed, which included multiple punches from an unidentified assailant.
The victim suffered swelling on the left side of his face and was transported to NYC Health + Hospitals/Woodhull, where he is currently in stable condition. Sources close to the situation allege that the victim was Rhymes' assistant, and the altercation involved Rhymes berating him for using his phone while working. When contacted by EW for comment, Rhymes' representatives did not immediately respond. Rhymes has publicly expressed his dislike for cell phones in the past, even urging audiences during a 2024 performance at the Essence Festival of Culture to put down their devices and interact more humanely. This is not the first time Rhymes has faced legal trouble. In 1998, he was arrested for gun possession. Around 2002, he was arrested for assault and drunk driving after an altercation with his driver over a pay dispute. He also faced charges for attacking a fan at the AmsterJam Music Festival and driving without a valid license. In 2015, Rhymes was arrested for assault after throwing a protein drink at a gym employee. He was sentenced to three years' probation for the various incidents in the early 2000s
