There were reports that the holding midfielder could possibly be heading to the United States of America or Saudi Arabia, but it is said that Busquets still feels like a valued member of Xavi Hernandez’s squad and would like to continue for at least one more year at the Camp Nou. The only condition on the club’s side is that the 34-year-old agrees to a significant pay cut on his new deal. The Spain international is currently earning €30 million a year, and due to the financial constraints the club are currently under, the eight-time LaLiga champion will have to take less than half of his annual salary in his next contract.
Busquets is expected to play one more season as the club prepare for life after the decorated playmaker. Ilkay Gundogan is expected to come in during the off season on a free transfer to deputise for him, but the club would preferably like to bring in either Martin Zubimendi or Marcelo Brozovic as replacements.
