Whether George P. Bush wins or loses, it’s a new era for the Bush dynasty – either its demise for the foreseeable future, or an overhaul of the brand.
At George P.’s campaign kickoff last summer, he used the family fissure as a selling point, passing out red koozies with: “This is the only Bush that likes me. This is the Bush that got it right. I like him.
” But loyalty is a core value for the Bushes. Whatever their growing political differences, George P.’s uncle and dad invested heavily in his bid for attorney general.according to campaign finance filings that list his occupation as “author/speaker” or “retired.”Their brothers, Neil and Marvin, kicked in $1,000 and $5,000, respectively. Longtime family associates say it’s premature to rule out a comeback. George P. is only 46, after all. And others in the clan bounced back from defeat. “He’s not going to just throw in the towel. I would be very surprised. That’s not the Bush way,” said, whose late husband, Robert Mosbacher Sr., served as commerce secretary in the elder Bush’s cabinet. Prescott Bush, George P.’s great-grandfather, lost his first bid for the Senate, in 1950, but won a seat two years later. George H.W. Bush lost two Senate races in Texas, in 1964 to incumbent Ralph Yarborough, and in 1970 to Lloyd Bentsen, who would later skewer Bush’s running mate, Dan Quayle, as “no Jack Kennedy” in the 1988 vice presidential debate.GOP consultant Ray Sullivan, who worked for George W. Bush as governor and on his campaigns, said the land commissioner’s ability to connect with younger and Latino voters gives him an opportunity to be a “strong voice in the Republican Party of Texas or nationally.”This was a thumping, all the more painful because Bush had effectively repudiated his family when he went all in for Trump in 2020 —not that Trump reciprocated. Like the Kennedys, the Bushes rose to power in the middle of the 20th century with a patriarch's fortune behind them and an abiding thirst for politics. Bush, .Paxton has been under indictment for securities fraud for his entire tenure, and — in an echo of Bush 43′s first campaign for president — George P. vowed to restore integrity to the office. In the 2000 campaign, memories were still fresh of Bill Clinton’s impeachment and affair with a young White House intern. At every stop, Bush 43 would raise his right hand and swear to uphold the Constitution and “the dignity of the office.” But Paxton had cemented Trump’s affection. He’d sued four states to nullify Joe Biden’s wins. He’s promoted Trump’s unsubstantiated claims about fraud. He spoke at Trump’s “stop the steal” rally just before the mob stormed the Capitol.The two ex-presidents in the family made it known they did not vote for Trump in 2016. Trump never called for advice, and when asked, averred that he had nothing to learn from the last Republican president. And after nine years of laying low on politics after leaving office, Bush 43 surfaced eight months into Trump’s presidency with a scathing critique. More scoldings would follow. “Bullying and prejudice in our public life … provides permission for cruelty and bigotry,” he said. “Our politics seems more vulnerable to conspiracy theories and outright fabrication.”Paxton’s reminders That friction was no secret, so for the Trump base in Texas it was an easy choice between a Trump loyalist with his seal of approval, or a Trump loyalist whose most prominent kinsman was anti-Trump. Paxton was only too happy to remind voters about the “Bush dynasty,” invoking the phrase as an epithet interchangeable with “RINO establishment darling.” “The battles we are facing are too important for conservatives to be betrayed by an inexperienced member of the `Bush Dynasty’ yet again,” he tweeted. Roughly 1 in 7 Paxton supporters cited the fact that he’s “not a Bush” as his best attribute — second only to Paxton’s job performance over more than seven years as attorney general.and the University of Texas at Tyler, wasn’t multiple choice. There was no prompting about the Bush name. Voters were asked what they liked most about their candidate, comparing him to his rival. One in four Bush supporters cited his integrity. Nearly as many cited the fact that he’s not Paxton. And 17% cited the fact that he’s a Bush.Blessed and trapped by the family name and reputation, Bush had little room to maneuver within a Texas Republican party that has moved steadily to the right for decades. “The right wing of the party are the ones who historically don’t like the Bush name,” said Engel, director of the Center for Presidential History at Southern Methodist University. “And the people who liked the Bush name — the moderate part of the Republican Party — they are turned off by his rhetoric and his lurch to the right.”Think Willie Horton, the furloughed rapist featured in an ad accusing Bush 41′s Democratic rival for president of being soft on crime. Or the whisper campaign accusing Sen. John McCain, Bush 43′s rival in the 2000 primaries, of fathering a non-White child out of wedlock. It would have helped if Bush had excelled as land commissioner, distinguishing himself within the clan by becoming a star in his own right and using the job, as others have, as a stepping stone.His agency’s ambitious redevelopment plan for the Alamo, to add a state-of-the-art museum and restore historic integrity to a site lined with tourist traps, came under fire.
