Pass offered to promote public transit

Anyone 18 and under will be able to ride buses, the Coaster, the Sprinter and trolleys throughout San Diego County for free with the Pronto card or app account beginning May 1, as part of a multi-agency partnership to promote public transit.Youth Opportunity Pass

Also as part of the pilot program, the two districts also expect to offer increased service later this year on weeknight and weekend routes in under-served areas of the region. The districts will work with community organizations to distribute the youth passes and publicize the transportation opportunities.

Expanding bus service could be a challenge. Both the North County and San Diego transit systems have been affected by a nationwide shortage of bus drivers. Bus runs have been cancelled almost daily over the past year because of the lack of drivers.Late last year MTS eliminated about 8 percent of its bus runs, cutting service on 16 of its routes because of the shortage.
