A Thursday night crash on northbound Interstate 65 near the Fair Oaks exit led to one man being hospitalized while another was arrested after he fled the scene.

Around 11:15 p.m., police responded to a crash involving a school bus and a semi in the northbound lanes of on I-65 at the 222 mile-marker, which is two miles north of the Fair Oaks exit, according to an Indiana State Police press release. Troopers located a school bus in the right ditch. The bus driver was pinned in the vehicle, but he was alert, the release stated.Preliminary investigation determined that the driver of the bus rear ended a semi in the right lane.

While troopers and first responders were extricating the driver of the bus, another trooper located the semi that left the scene in the rear parking lot of the Love’s Truck Stop located on Indiana 10 in Jasper County, the release stated. Police observed that the semi trailer sustained substantial damage that was consistent with being involved in a significant crash recently.

The bus driver was the only occupant of his vehicle. He was trapped inside of the bus for several hours while the fire department worked to remove him, police said. Once he was removed, the driver was transported to Franciscan Health Hospital in Rensselaer and later taken to a hospital in Chicago for treatment of potential life-threatening injuries.

This bus was new and was being driven to another location, the release stated. The bus is owned by Norton Transport Inc. located in Rock Spring, Georgia. The semi is owned by Weini Transportation LLC, based in Charlotte, North Carolina.
