A bus driver in Juniata County School District was fired after posting a sign prohibiting Spanish on her bus. The Department of Justice's Civil Rights division is investigating the incident. The driver claims the sign was a response to a disruptive bilingual student, while the district and contractor stated the driver was fired after an investigation.

Diane Crawford and the sign that led to her being fired from the Juniata County School District as a bus driver . The Civil Rights branch of the Department of Justice says it will be looking into a bus driver 's firing, after she put up a sign that said "no speaking Spanish on the bus.

"CBS 21 spoke exclusively to the former driver, Diane Crawford, who said she put the sign on her bus due to a rowdy bilingual student who had a history of riling up others in Spanish.Out of respect to English-only students, there will be no speaking Spanish on this bus. Days after CBS 21 aired the story, Assistant Attorney General for the DOJ's Civil Rights department , Harmeet Dhillon, reposted the story on X, saying: This is deeply concerning. I have directed Civil Rights to open an investigation into this situation implicating DEI wokeness. That post has since garnered hundreds of comments both in support of Crawford and directly criticizing the DOJ's investigation into her case. Crawford, a 66-year-old who drove for the Juniata County School District, told CBS 21 she never expected writing the note would come at the price of her job. "I don't know what else to do. I'm on Medicare and Medicaid now and SNAP," she said. "I had to go on antidepressants because of this." Crawford claimed she was fired overnight after the sign was posted and claimed no investigation was opened into why she wrote the message. In a joint statement previously provided to CBS 21, the district and Rohrer Bus, who contracted Crawford, said they were aware of her claims. Following the incident in question, the District and Rohrer jointly reviewed the situation in accordance with established procedures. The investigation concluded after the subcontractor provided a written admission confirming that the signage had been installed on her bus. At that point, the relevant facts of the situation were fully known and discussed among District and Rohrer leadership. The statement then said that following the investigation, and after "careful consideration", "the District and Rohrer determined that the conduct did not align with the standards and expectations for student transportation providers."While initial communications referenced a suspension pending investigation, the matter progressed quickly once the written statement was received, and a final decision was made without delay. Following the termination of Crawford's contract, the district and Rohrer stated training was conducted by the Pennsylvania Human Relations Commission on April 17, 2025, for Juniata County School District transportation providers. Both the District and Rohrer take student behavior concerns seriously and strive to support drivers when concerns are reported through established communication and documentation channels so that issues can be addressed appropriately and collaboratively. Both organizations remain strong advocates for safe, respectful, and professional school transportation. All employment matters are handled with care and respect for the individuals involved, while keeping student well-being and district standards as the top priority. Juniata County School District and Rohrer Bus stand by the decision made in this matter and remain committed to providing a safe and inclusive transportation environment for all students. She said she is "grateful for all the prayers and support that this community and now our country have and are showing me.""I felt like my dedication to driving bus for 35 years meant nothing to the school district administration, and Rohrer bus, who was supposed to be managing transportation in the district. To be fired for asking for respect is unbelievable to me. I did ask for help. They literally threw me under the bus instead of helping me."Ginther's office responds to backlash over immigration stance Columbus Mayor Andrew Ginther is under fire from some of President Trump's supporters following Ginther's recent social media post.Ginther stated last week thaFranklin County Emergency Management and Homeland Security will not hold siren tests on Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve.2-year-old dies after east Columbus shooting
