IPOH: Sand mining activities are not the cause of the burst pipe at the Teluk Kepayang water treatment plant in Bota, Perak, says Datuk Seri Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin.

The perak infrastructure, energy, water and public transport committee chairman said there were no such activities near the plant that could have caused the damage."The soil movement caused the position of the pipes to shift in the ground. It is not related to sand-mining activities," he said in a press conference after presenting food boxes and shopping vouchers to recipients at the Carsem banquet hall here on Sunday .

There had been claims by environmental activists that sand-mining activities along Sungai Perak could have led to the burst pipe that resulted in unscheduled water cuts, affecting nearly 80,000 consumers in the Manjung and Perak Tengah districts earlier this month.Mohammad Nizar assured that there would be no water cuts during the upcoming Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebrations.

"I hope it will not happen. Maintenance works will be conducted to ensure there is no disruption," he said.
