Burkina Faso army executed over 220 villagers in February, Human Rights Watch says
A soldier salutes in front of the coffins of 27 soldiers killed in an ambush claimed by Al-Qaeda in 2022. Human Rights Watch alleges that, in revenge for jihadist attacks on the military, soldiers executed hundreds of villagers.
Burkina Faso's military in February summarily executed about 223 villagers, including at least 56 children, as part of a campaign against civilians accused of collaborating with jihadist militants, Human Rights Watch said on Thursday. As with previous cases of extrajudicial killings in the country, no official findings have been released.
The soldiers went door-to-door, ordering people out of their homes and rounding them up before opening fire, HRW said in its report, citing witnesses.
